De richtlijnen uit de NHG-Standaarden zijn – voor zover mogelijk – gebaseerd op bewijs uit wetenschappelijk onderzoek. Via zoekacties worden relevante artikelen gezocht in de Cochrane Library Clinical Evidence Embase en PubMed (Medline). Ook worden andere richtlijnen geraadpleegd via de database van het US National Guideline Clearinghouse en de website van enkele belangrijke richtlijnorganisaties (NICE SIGN et cetera). De gevonden artikelen worden beoordeeld op relevantie voor de vraagstelling en voor de eerstelijnsgeneeskunde. De kwaliteit van het onderzoek en het niveau van de bewijskracht worden kritisch beschouwd. De aldus geselecteerde artikelen onderbouwen de conclusies en aanbevelingen uit de NHG-Standaarden.
