صدرت النسخة الأولى منه بالإنجليزيّة عام ألفٍ وسبعمئةٍ وستة للميلاد. جمعت قصص ألف ليلةٍ وليلة على مدى عددٍ من القرون عن طريق مؤلفين وباحثين ومترجمين من شتى أنحاء آسيا والشمال الإفريقي
تعود مجمل حكايات الكتاب إلى القرون الوسطى في كلٍ من الحضارة العربيّة والحضارة الفارسيّة والحضارة المصريّة والحضارة الهنديّة، بالإضافة لحضارات بلاد الرافدين اد ان غالبيّة تلك الحكايا هي عبارةٌ عن قصصٍ شعبيّة كانت رائجة منذ عهد الخلافة، أما بعضها الآخر وعلى وجه التحديد حكاية (الإطار) فيرجح بأنها قد استخلصت من العمل الفارسي البهلوي (ألف خرافة)، وقد اعتمدت تلك بدورها وبشكلٍ جزئي على الأدب الهندي.

نبذة عن كتاب ألف ليلة وليلة القصّة
حكاية ألف ليلةٍ وليلة هي قصة الملك شهريار، حيث كانت قصة الملك هي الإطار لباقي الحكايا التي وردت في الكتاب، وكانت بداية حكايته عند اكتشافه خيانة زوجة أخيه الأمر الذي صدمه كثيراً، يليها اكتشف خيانة زوجته له فكانت الصدمة غير محتملة، وقرر إعدامها على الفور، وهنا بدأت رحلة انتقامه من النساء، لأنه أصبح يعتبرهنّ جميعاً مخطئات، فقد كان يتزوج كل يومٍ من عذراء، ويقوم بقتلها ليلة العرس قبل أن تقوم بخيانته. كان الوزير مكلفاً بإيجاد عروسٍ للملك بشكلٍ يومي، وبعد فترةٍ لم يعد يجد مزيداً من العذارى، وفي ذلك الوقت قامت ابنة الوزير والتي كانت تسمى شهرزاد بعرض نفسها لتكون عروساً للملك، تردد أبوها في البداية لكنه وافق بعد ذلك على مضض، وفي ليلة الزفاف بدأت شهرزاد بسرد الحكايا للملك دون أن تنهيها، وقد أثارت تلك الحكايات فضول الملك لمعرفة النهاية الأمر الذي دفعه لتأجيل إعدامها حتى تنهي الحكايا. وفي ليلتها التالية أنهت حكاية وبدأت بسرد أخرى وزاد شوق الملك لمعرفة نهايتها أيضاً، واستمر الأمر على هذا الحال حتى أكملت شهرزاد الألف ليلةٍ وليلة. الشخوص البارزون في ألف ليلةٍ وليلة تشمل الحكايا في ألف ليلةٍ وليلة الخليفة هارون الرشيد ووزيره (جعفر البرمكي)
