وهو مجموعة من الحكايات تدور على ألسنة الحيوانات يحكيها الفيلسوف بيدبا للملك دبشليم، ويبث من خلالها ابن المقفع آراءه السياسية في المنهج القويم للحُكْم، والمشهور أن ابن المقفع ترجم هذه الحكايات عن الفارسية، وأنها هندية الأصل، لكن أبحاثًا كثيرة حديثة تؤكد أن كليلة ودمنة من تأليف ابن المقفع وليست مجرد ترجمة، كما أن بعض هذه الأبحاث يعتقد أن الآراء التي أوردها ابن المقفع في كليلة ودمنة كانت أحد الأسباب المباشرة لنهايته الأليمة
