Candomblé é uma religião afro-brasileira derivada de cultos tradicionais africanos na qual há crença em um Ser Supremo (Olorum Mawu ou Nzambi dependendo da nação) e culto dirigido a forças da natureza personificadas na forma ancestrais divinizados: orixás voduns ou inquices dependendo da nação.

De origem totêmica e familiar é a religião declarada de 03% da população brasileira segundo dados do Censo 2010 do IBGE. Também é possível encontrar praticantes em outros países como Uruguai Argentina Áustria Suíça Itália Alemanha Portugal e Espanha.

Inicialmente reprimido pela sociedade escravocrata pela Igreja Católica pelo Estado e rejeitado pela sociedade; o candomblé (como outros cultos de matriz africana) "formavam até meados do século XX uma espécie de instituição de resistência cultural primeiramente dos africanos e depois dos afro-descendentes muita coisa mudou fazendo dessas religiões organizações de culto desprendidas das amarras étnicas raciais geográficas e de classes sociais". Dessa forma os elementos culturais que compõem o candomblé são na atualidade uma parte integrante da cultura do folclore brasileiros.

O candomblé não deve ser confundido com a umbanda ou com outras religiões afro-brasileiras e afro-americanas com similar origem (tambor de mina omolokô xangô pernambucano ou batuque brasileiros; vodu haitiano a santería cubana o obeah e o kumina jamaicanos o winti surinamês dentre outras) as quais foram desenvolvidas independentemente do candomblé e são virtualmente desconhecidas no Brasil.

Initially repressed by the slave society by the Catholic Church by the State and rejected by society; Candomblé (like other African-based cults) "formed until the mid-twentieth century a kind of institution of cultural resistance firstly for Africans and after Afro-descendants much has changed making these religions organizations of worship detached from the ethnic racial geographical and social class ties ". Thus the cultural elements that make up candomblé are at present an integral part of the culture of Brazilian folklore.

Candomblé should not be confused with Umbanda or other Afro-Brazilian and Afro-American religions of similar origin (mine drum omolokô Pernambuco xangô or Brazilian batuque; Haitian voodoo Cuban santería Jamaican obeah and kumina Surinamese winti among others) which were developed independently of candomblé and are virtually unknown in Brazil.
