شطرنج یا چترنگ یک بازی دونفره است که بر روی صفحه شطرنج و با استفاده از مهره‌های شطرنج (شاه، وزیر، رخ، فیل، اسب و سرباز) انجام می‌شود. هدف این بازی مات کردنِ حریف است؛ یعنی ایجاد وضعیتی که شاه حریف هیچ راهی برای فرار نداشته باشد. شطرنج دارای تاکتیک‌هایی ازجمله چنگال و آچمز و دارای جنبش‌ها و حرکات ویژه‌ای مانند حرکت قلعه، آن‌پاسان و ترفیع پیاده است.
