جمع أبو داود في كتابه هذا جملة من الأحاديث، وقد بلغت أحاديثه 5274 حديثـًا، وكتابه السنن صنفه وانتقاه من خمسمائة ألف حديث.

اسمه : سليمان بن الأشعث السجستاني، وهو من سجستان وهي مدينة تقع في أرض البلوش الازديين والتي تقع في إيران، وله مؤلفات منها : مسائل الإمام أحمد، المراسيل، وأشهرها : سنن أبي داود، ويعتبر أبو داود من أبرز علماء الحديث ، وهو أحد أصحاب الكتب الستة، ولد سنة 202 هـ وتوفي سنة 275 هـ.

وقد وجه أبو داوود همه في هذا الكتاب إلى جمع الأحاديث التي استدل بها الفقهاء، ودارت بينهم، وبنى عليها الأحكام علماء الأمصار، وتسمى هذه الأحاديث (أحاديث الأحكام) وقد قال المؤلف في رسالته لأهل مكة: (فهذه الأحاديث أحاديث السنن كلها في الأحكام، فأما أحاديث كثيرة في الزهد والفضائل، وغيرها من غير هذا فلم أخرجها).
