ولد. محمد الخليفاتي في 11 يوليو عام 1966 في غربة الواد، أحد الأحياء في منطقة سعيدة غرب الجزائر. وأبوه الذي اشتغل في أحد مصانع الورق كان رجلاً صارماًوفقيرا . وأجبر هذا الوضع العائلي مامي الصغير السن على قبول العمل في أي شيء لمساعدة أبيه على كسب القوت اليومي. وظهر ميل مامي نحو الغناء منذ سن مبكر. وقيل إنه كان يفضل ترديد أنغام ومقطوعات من "أغاني غريبة" عوض القيام بواجباته الدراسية. فانتهى به الأمر أن أصبح يغني في الأعراس والنوادي الليلية عندما كبر. شارك في برنامج "الحان وشباب" في سن الثالة عشرة وتحصل على المركز الثاني.
