رقص عربی که در غرب به رقص شکم یا اورینتال شهرت دارد، رقصی عموماً ویژهٔ زنان است. شاید اطلاق نام رقص شکم به این نوع رقص چندان بامسمی نباشد چرا که در این نوع رقص اکثر قسمت‌های بدن به کار گرفته شده و مهم‌ترین حرکت‌های این رقص، حرکت‌های باسن است. تاریخ ظهور و محل بومی این رقص نامشخص است.مستنداتی که به این نوع رقص اشاره کرده‌اند بیشتر به دو قرن اخیر مربوط می‌شود. عده ای آن را رقص زنان کولی و رقاصه‌های خاص در دربار شاهان صفوی و عده ای آن را به دربار پادشاهان عثمانی در مصر مربوط کرده‌اند. در حرمسراهای دوره صفوی نیز سوگلی‌ها و رقاصه‌های ویژه اندرونی حرم سرا وجود داشته‌است.

Dance in the West known as belly or oriental dance is generally a women's dance. The name belly dance may not be so danceable as most body parts are used in this type of dance and the most important movements of this dance are hip movements. The date and venue of this dance is unclear. Some associated it with gypsy women dancing and special dances at the court of the Safavid kings and some associated it with the court of the Ottoman kings in Egypt. In the harem of the Safavid period there were also moguls and ballet dancers inside the shrine.
