필사는 깊은 독서이다. 필사하다 보면 어떤 문장은 외울 수 있게 되기도 한다.

글은 엉덩이로 쓴다. 라는 격언처럼 작가에게 끈기는 매우 중요하다. 집중력을 발휘해 오래 앉아 많이 써야 좋은 글을 쓸 수 있다는 뜻이다. 당신이 초보라면 원고지에 몇 문장 쓰고 나서 엉덩이가 들썩거리면서 안전부절하리라. 필사는 집중력을 키우고 글쓰기 경험을 대리 경험하는 효과가 있다.

워드프로세서로 베껴 써도 무방하지만 보통 필기구로 쓰기를 추천한다. 그 이유는 아날로그의 장점 때문이다. 눈의 피로도가 모니터보다 덜하고 글쓰기 속도가 타자기보다 느린 만큼 쓰는 문장을 더욱 많이 느끼고 생각할 수 있다. 문장을 오래 쓰면 손이 피곤해지므로 간결체로 쓰는 버릇을 들이기 쉽다는 장점도 있다.

작법을 훈련하려고 워드프로세서로써 필사하고자 한다면 문장 하나하나를 곱씹어 가면서 천천히 해야 한다. 그러나 필사는 또다른 독서일 뿐 백지에 자신의 소설을 쓰는 일과는 다르다. 절대 기계처럼 정신줄 놓고 받아쓰기하는 막노동이 되지 않도록 순간순간 흩어지는 집중력을 되잡는 일이 중요하다.

필사하다 보면 자신의 작품이 필사해 본 다른 작품에 매우 많이 영향받으므로 어떤 작품을 필사할지 심사숙고해서 결정해야 한다.

필사하는 몇몇 지망생은 문장에만 집착하기도 한다. '시'가 아니라 '소설'이라면 이야기가 더욱 중요하므로 문장 질만 올리는 필사는 효율이 나쁘다.

시를 지은 윤동주는 시인 백석의 시집을 필사했다고 한다. 여러 작가의 여러 창작품을 표절한 신경숙도 《난장이가 쏘아올린 작은 공》을 필사하면서 문체를 만들었다고 한다

Some inquirers who transcribe are obsessed with sentences only. The story is more important if it is not'poetry' but'fiction' so transcription that only improves the quality of sentences is not efficient.

It is said that Yun Dong-ju who wrote the poem transcribed the poet Baek Seok's collection of poetry. Shin Kyung-sook who plagiarized many creations by several authors is said to have created a style by transcribing 《Small Balls Launched by a Dwarf》.
