Hapkido is a Korean martial arts self - defense focused on punches
kicks throws and joint locks. Hapkido classes often have some
weapons training (i.e. with staffs canes and swords). Hapkido also
emphasizes circular motion non-resisting movements and control of
an opponent. Unlike the Korean martial arts of Taekwondo Hapkido
generally does not use forms & patterns as part of its
training.
Hapkido contains both long and close range fighting techniques utilizing specialized Hapkido kicks and percussive hand strikes at longer ranges and pressure point strikes Hapkido joint locks and or throws at closer fighting distances.
There is a spin-off of traditional Hapkido known as Combat Hapkido. This martial arts was started in America by John Pelligrini in 1990. Combat Hapkido adds a greater self-defense and grappling focus to Hapkido training.
Hapkido is the anti-martial art. It was designed as a way to defend against and overcome an attacker with skill in many forms of martial combat. With roots in Aiki-jujitsu Hapkido adds striking and punching to joint-locks throws and grappling making it one of the original mixed martial arts. However unlike modern MMA training Hapkido gives the student a solid base in different forms of defense and roots the strategy of that defense in the principles of water circle and harmony. This gives the student a solid framework on which to develop their skill so that they are not caught off-guard when in real defense situations.
It is designed to allow a martial artist to rapidly subdue an opponent and render any attacker completely incapable of causing harm. Since Hapkido affords total control over a physical confrontation and emphasizes precision over brute strength the hapkido list can localize any damage dealt to an opponent and avoid creating unintended injury.
Hapkido is the art and science of self defense. It combines a powerful arsenal of kicks and punches with thrusts sweeps and a combination of hard and soft hand techniques. Throws and wrist and joint locks are also a feature of Hapkido.
Hapkido is based on three principles and through the knowledge of these an opponent's force can be used against them. This makes Hapkido truly a form of Self Defence that everyone can use. We also offer full time training private lessons instructor courses as well as special seminars to improve and expand your knowledge.
